Steam is the gaseous form of water. Due to the high specific temperature of water, it can be used to efficiently transmit heat if induced to condense on a surface cooler than the boiling point of water. Given the vast difference in volume between steam vapor and condensed liquid water, it has long been harnessed as an efficient method of transforming heat energy into mechanical work.
