Welcome to Earf [Independence Day 2/ID5 in 2015!]

in 1996, Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin showed us a visionary glimpse of the future of filmmaking, science, and contact with life beyond our own planet.

image

Independence Day featured stellar breakout performances from otherwise-unknown acting talent:

N08RyHB.jpg
William Smith, a virtually-unknown young actor,

bcTFaIy.jpg
William Pullman, who previously starred in an unknown 80s sci-fi B-movie, and

MTWxZCx.jpg
some shirtless dude from a 1993 dinosaur movie.

Independence Day went on to smash box office records, making millions of then-not-worthless American dollars by charming moviegoers with deep and biting commentary on U.S. society and on what it means to be human. The riveting performances alone were worth the admission:

now Roland Emmerich is returning to bring us Independence Day 2, which has a release date of July 3, 2015.

in all seriousness, i am really psyched for this. i loved the original Independence Day. it is incredibly cheesy and shallow, sure, but it somehow hit the right tone of summer action flick. what do you folks think?

Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls, Pushing Daisies, Mockingbird Lane...and [Hannibal]?

Next week on Thursday night will be the premiere of NBC's new show Hannibal.

hannibalkeyart.jpg

This was completely off my radar, as it seems like there are several serial-killer themed shows coming out and I didn't really see the need for a Hannibal tv show to exist (especially on broadcast television) so I had basically ignored everything about it beyond it's existence.

However, today something caught my interest. Not unlike a shark catching a goose.
Spoiler:
48884c80e1e41.jpg

Hannibal is a Bryan Fuller show. He's best known for creating a variety of quirky shows that promptly get cancelled so hard that pre-Avengers Joss Whedon feels bad for him (the most recent show having been cancelled before it even aired, though we did eventually get to see the pilot).

This time they've at least already guaranteed him a full first season of 13 episodes. Apparently he plans to have each season (assuming he is actually allowed more than 1-2 this time) as a 13-episode story arc with little-to-no fluff, and has already planned out at least the first two seasons.

Also, it takes place in the same universe as all those other shows he created. Not kidding. The actress that portrayed Gretchen Speck in Wonderfalls will be reprising her role in an early episode of Hannibal (and if I had to guess, I'd say she's probably going to die). My wife and I recently finished her first viewing of Lost, so we had moved on to Wonderfalls (having already watched the other Fuller shows), and just watched Gretchen Speck's episodes this past weekend.

Despite my initial reservations about the Hannibal show existing, Bryan Fuller has earned enough good will for me to give it a shot. Besides, it's bound to be better than the likes of Dexter Season 6, and I'm still watching Dexter.

So who's our cast?

Hugh Dancy will be playing Agent Will Graham (a character who was recently portrayed by Edward Norton in Red Dragon).
Mads Mikkelsen (main bad guy from Casino Royale) is playing Hannibal (a character best known for Anthony Hopkin's portrayal of him).
Caroline Dhavernas (main character from Wonderfalls) is playing Dr. Alana Bloom, a psychology professor who consults for the FBI.
Lara Jean Chorostecki plays Fredricka Lounds, a tabloid blogger.

The supporting cast includes Laurence Fishburne as Graham's Boss at the FBI, with his wife being portrayed by his real-life wife Gina Torres, as well as DANA SCULLY Gillian Anderson as Hannibal's psychotherapist. Plus a few actors from previous Fuller shows.

Guest stars are also rumored to include Ellen Muth (who portrayed the main character in Dead Like Me), Molly Shannon (who appeared in Pushing Daisies), and Eddie Izzard (who portrayed Grandpa in Mockingbird Lane). They are presumably playing new characters, but since this is the same universe as the rest of the Fuller series, I'm fully behind the idea of introducing Grim Reapers and Vampires to the world of Hannibal.

Early buzz (or rather, what I found with a few minutes of googling) seems to be very positive, though one reviewer notes that it was apparently more violent than they were expecting for broadcast television. Apparently the show also has a "cannibal consultant" who advises them on the proper procedure for preparing human flesh for consumption.

The first episode is set to air next week on April 4th at 10pm on NBC. It is supposed to run without interruption until it's finale on June 27th. Presumably notice of it's cancellation will follow (especially since the director of the premiere is the same guy who directed the premiere of Awake, so this show is like double-cursed or something).

Also, all the episode titles are French words for food-related things, with the finale being "Savoureux" (or "Delicious").

Just off the heels of Man of Steel, we now have the Wolverine for our next comic movie.

Following that will be Red 2:

Then Thor 2:

Then next year we've got Captain America 2, X-men: Days of Future Past, and so on.

Also Kick Ass 2 is in there somewhere but I don't really care about it.

edit: Whoops, Ceno beat me to it while I was hunting down trailer links. Close this one please.

If you're uninterested in discussing furniture or architecture, but you do enjoy percussion, watch this while I get this party started:
image

For a long time, I considered becoming an interior designer or decorator, but figured that was too much math or schmoozing that I wasn't willing to do at the time. English majors. Still, I retain a fondness for architectural drawings and mood boards and ogling buildings and interiors and DIY in general; let's not discuss my stack of old Architectural Digests, Woodworking and various design and decorating books scattered around. Alternately, let's!

Let me tell you about my collection of rug books...

I have yet to settle on a preference for one period or style, though Arts and Crafts is beyond charming; I look for older houses and apartments – lots of wood floors, Art Deco detailing and the like – though you wouldn't guess it by our furnishings. Our decorating scheme is “Early College.”

Budget be damned, I find myself lusting after Mid-Century Modern (/ filtered Bauhaus) designs. To wit:

YrC8k.jpg
the Diamond lounge chair, originally designed by Harry Bertoia

vZVKO.jpg
the Barcelona chair, by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

Colp0.jpg
50 bucks, via Craigslist, kindofwant

Rather behind on my links, but sites I've enjoyed:
So, what kind of furniture do you like? Which designs do you wish had knock-offs, what niche do you plan to fill with DIY? What amazing thrifts have you scored, or kick yourself for passing on?

Do you love Brutalist buildings and the Chicago school? (Me, too!) Are you building a log cabin, or drawing your dream castle with secret passageways?

Here's my shitty pinterest board of furniture (very limited.) Please share your own, so I can steal your inspiration like a meme-vampire!

Why Are You Awesome? [NSF-Humility]

So for whatever reason, I tend to downplay my accomplishments, but I am proud of what I do.

For example, I just found out that I'm in the running for the Jefferson Award (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jefferson_Awards_for_Public_Service) in D.C. for my work performing magic for kids in the hospital. Oprah and Jimmy Carter have won this award. If I win, it'll be something awesome to put on my MBA application, seeing as I want to go back to school to start my own not-for-profit helping kids in the hospital.

In addition, I'm going to be on WGN news at 5 talking about the organization I work with.

Oh, and I'm pretty kick ass at my family business of running apartments that'll I'll eventually take over. And I've gotten good enough at cooking that I cooked Thanksgiving dinner this past year all by myself and everyone said it was the best Thanksgiving dinner we've ever had.

So go ahead SE++, toot your own horn. No need to be humble. Brag about whatever you want.

Tell Me a Story

I probably met a porn star once.

This was while I was a register biscuit at a used bookstore: I was at said register when a strikingly familiar-looking lady came in and started browsing the science fiction section. I stared at her for a minute or two, wondering where I knew her from; eventually, I realized I was having a hard time recognizing her because I'd never seen her with clothes on. Obviously, the next step was to talk to her.

This presented some difficulties.

First, I couldn't be sure of who she was without asking her. And how, pray, does one ask that question? It's not like I can just walk up and say, “Excuse me, but have you ever taken a dick on film?” There's no precedent for this; normally, when you think you recognize someone, it isn't because you once saw a video of them getting nailed against a van by some blowjob wearing a pair of Newbalance sneakers and a Kanji ass tattoo.

Second, any compliment or statement is suddenly pregnant with implied filth. She knows exactly what I've seen her do; she knows I've seen her butthole, for fuck's sake. I imagine, then, that anything I could ever say to her would have this raw sexual subtext where even the most mundane and innocuous phrases suddenly become the most suggestive phrases imaginable. Observe:

“I really like your work,”...especially the way you work the undercarriage.

“You're a very pretty lady,”...when you're getting pounded.

“I'm a big fan,”...of your vagina.

Ultimately, I decided that conversation was out of the question.

So I just asked her if she needed help finding anything.

Turns out, she didn't.

That's a story. Now you tell one.

Welcome, delicious friend! Welcome to the Echo Bazaar...

Where is the Bazaar?

The Bazaar is located at the heart of Fallen London, in the Neath, a cavern of impossible size, by the Unterzee, a tremendous saltwater lake. They say it's the skull of some defunct pagan god. That doesn't sound very likely. Although it would explain the dreams.

Thirty years ago, London was stolen. By who or what, nobody seems to know - and only revolutionaries and anarchists say 'stolen' any more. But a fantastic Bazaar has sprung up in the middle of Fallen London where anything can be bought or sold if you know what to ask for, Hell has established an embassy, and suddenly death doesn't seem to mean much...

Echo Bazaar is a browser game like Kingdom of Loathing, where you have a limited set of actions which replenish every so often, and a limited amount of total actions per day. However, the good bit about it (and what makes it different from other games like Mafia Wars) is that most of the time, you're using those actions not only to grind stats, but to find out more about the world. Echo Bazaar is filled with little 'storylets', similar to those books that Rank keeps making threads about, that drip-feed you a little more of the Neath. That's what makes it so addictive for me.

Check it out at http://echobazaar.failbettergames.com . No affiliate links, no trickery. Just a lot of cool lore and interesting things to find.

If you'd like to play a game of chess or perhaps spend an evening confiding your nightmares in me, my twitter username is @karlnp. Feel free to follow. Perhaps we'll make a day of shopping at the Bazaar.

To sign up, all you need to have is a Twitter or Facebook account. I know that seems shady, but you don't have to actually do anything with those - although you can retweet or post some element of trivia about the game to replenish your actions (once per day), it's not mandatory. You can play this game without ever posting to your twitter feed.

You start out in Newgate Prison, a Stranger of Indeterminate Past.. but Echo Bazaar's strength is allowing you to determine how you escape and who you were before your capture.

gave Morsi 48 hours to step down or be ousted, they're going to dissolve the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood's legislature and suspend the constitution.

That deadline passed about 6 hours ago, and Morsi remains defiant.

Trigeminal Neuralgia

So, I was diagnosed about two months ago with TN en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trigeminal_neuralgia. It is a debilatating chronic pain condition that affects the face. There is a nerve in your cheek or thereabouts that controls pain in the face and mine has gone haywire. I was prescribed Lyrica/Pregabolin for this, but its starting to wear off. I am going to see a Neurologist on Friday (NHS yay) but am scared to death of what he will say.
It feels rather like what I imagine being tazered in the face would feel like.
The options are pain relief (though they stopped giving me codeine because they are scared of it getting too moreish) and surgery which is a last resort option. They also dont perform it in Northern Ireland where I live so I would have to go over to England for the op, or possibly down to the Irish Republic.
I just wondered if anyone else is a fellow sufferer or has a family member with the condition. I did a search and found a few folks who had relatives with the condition.
Feel free to chat or ask questions about the condition.

I went down to my parents' farm for the weekend, and I spent most of my time down there helping my stepdad clear paths through the forest to his deer stand and shit. Ugh. Do you even have any idea how many ticks I found on my ballsack? Five! Five ticks. On my ballsack.

For the record, pulling ticks off your ballsack hurts like a motherfucker. And I bet I'm going to get lyme disease or whatever.

Fuck nature. Burn it all down and turn it into a parking lot.

Primarily set on a frozen planet called Tau Volantis, the game will follow protagonists Isaac Clarke and John Carver as they attempt to end the Necromorph threat.

Each player will have alternate experiences as a result of their characters' dementia. A Visceral Games employee has confirmed it was "always intended to have co-op in Dead Space."
