Video Game Frustration

$

Are there any common phrases you say out of frustration when you play games? Or is it mostly just swearing? :P

Some of my common ones are:

"How did you not die though?"

"Are you serious?"

"I just want to be friends!" *While I'm running after someone, about to kill them*

"That's what I thought." *Smug face after killing someone*

Adventure Time: And before there was nothing, there were monsters.

We've had two mathematical threads devoted to this series, and the third part is finally here! Adventure Time is a cartoon aired weekly every Monday night at 6 PM EST on Cartoon Network. The main characters are a human (Finn) and dog (Jake), with a smorgasbord of supporting characters (just some of the best are Ice King, Princess Bubblegum, Flame Princess, BMO, Gunter, Cinnamon Bun, and the Earl of Lemongrab, and I could go on so much longer).

The characters on the series are just the tipping point of the numerous things to love about the series, though. The creator of Adventure Time also created another great series, this one web-exclusive, called Bravest Warriors.

Former writer/storyboard artist for the show, Rebecca Sugar, has contributed some wonderful music that also make the show stand out on CN (these can be heard on Rob's Youtube channel. Not only is the music aired on TV great, but it has also inspired some good covers from fans.

If you have Tumblr, follow Natasha Allegri, another storyboard artist and character designer.

If you aren't able to watch the series live at its regularly scheduled time, never fret! There are various DVDs/BluRays available, from the complete first 2 seasons, to randomly selected episodes. The random ones are especially good, as one (Jake vs Me-Mow) comes with a Finn hat, and another (Jake the Dad) is coming out in a month (Sept. 17 to be exact) that comes with a Jake hat!

Shadow of Mordor: Like Hatoful Boyfriend, but with Orcs. Bright Lord DLC out now!

We live in a miraculous age. An age where a 12-year old can write a fanfic where his OC Talion (OC stands for Original Character, don't steal) teams up with Celebrimbor, Greatest Smith of the Second Age and forger of the rings of power, to simply walk into Mordor and take down Sauron and that fanfic can be turned into an actual video game. I am, of course, referring to

YqZsMpY.jpg

What is it?

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is an upcoming game developed by Monolith Productions, the developers of games like FEAR and Condemned. It is being produced by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, and its combat system seems to borrow heavily from another Warner Bros. property, the Arkham Asylum series of games. The game takes place between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and is set in the land of Mordor, Sauron's stronghold. Mordor is broken up into several regions, but within each region there are many potential objectives and opponents, giving the game an open-world feel as you can pick-and-choose the path you take and the order of the quests you want to pursue. Think Arkham City's open-world nature.

Combat is built around building up large strings of attacks without taking damage or pausing. After building up a certain number of attacks you can use a special move, for example a "ground pound" where Talion slams the ground and sends nearby foes flying, or dominating an enemy and bending them into an ally. Talion's primary weapon is his sword, but he also has a dagger (forged from the broken sword of his son) and a bow which he acquired from Celebrimbor (the bow uses spectral arrows, which you can acquire by draining power from enemies.) The bow is useful for ranged attacks, for setting foes aflame with fire arrows, or for exploding campfires and barrels of grog, but is also useful for quickly traversing the battlefield as it can teleport you to faraway foes. Teleporting onto a beast allows you to dominate that beast, giving you a steed for charging through the camps of Sauron's army. The dagger, meanwhile, is useful for stealth combat, where you can sneak through the camps and take out your foes Assassin's Creed-style. All in all, the combat seems to have potential for great replayability, as each scenario can be approached from numerous directions and the combo system gives you a metric to work towards improving. But really, fun as all that is, the main draw of the game is yet to come.

The Nemesis System

While the combat system alone would give me reason to play Shadow of Mordor repeatedly (I spent much more time replaying challenges in the Arkham Asylum games than playing through the story) what gives Shadow of Mordor seemingly infinite replayability is its Nemesis system. Rather than having set enemies, the game is filled with procedurally-generated foes with their own stats and characteristics. These enemies, depending on their rank, are then given Titles/Nicknames based upon their traits, such as the less-than-attractive Azgrom Ugly-Face
zbSnwPA.jpg

Each enemy has varying strengths and weaknesses, including extra vulnerability to certain attacks and immunity to certain attacks. Some enemies may have fears, where you can use specific tactics against them to scare them into retreating. Others have "Hates" which function similarly to fears except, rather than retreating, the enemy becomes enraged and is much more formidable. If you have gathered intel on your opponent, you can look up all of these strengths and weaknessess which will aid you in combat. I'm sure there's a Sun Tzu quote about that somewhere
xwK8sMZ.jpg

There are 3 ranks of units in Shadow of Mordor. Sauron's army is led by Warchiefs. These powerful enemies direct the army and must be drawn out to engage them in combat. They are fearsome, with many strengths that make them difficult to defeat in combat. Below the Warchiefs are Captains, soldiers that have proven themselves in combat and serve as the bodyguards of the Warchiefs. At the lowest level are Grunts. These enemies have no titles and are mostly the cannon-fodder of their superiors. Most are doomed to die nameless in combat, but a lucky few may rise in rank after defeating a great adversary.

This system of enemies is what I find to be the most intriguing part of Shadow of Mordor. Talion and Celebrimbor make a powerful duo, but in order to defeat Sauron, they will need an army of their own. By dominating Captains in combat, Talion is able to enter Uruk-Hai politics and advance those orcs that are loyal to him through the army ranks. After dominating an orc, you can give it a command, such as ordering him to kill another Captain, ordering him to betray his Warchief, or ordering him to attempt an initiation to gain the favor of another Warchief (whom he can later help you betray). You can also simply steal intel from his brain, giving you information on an enemy's strengths and weaknesses, but this option appears to always be lethal. After you have given an Uruk-hai a mission, you can help him complete his goal, or you can let time pass and have him attempt it on his own (depending on the difficulty of the goal and his own strengths, he may or may not succeed without Talion's help). By pushing your minion up the ranks, he can eventually become a Warchief, and all of his followers will also be loyal to you. This creates an interesting system in how you choose which Captains to advance; the weaker captains will be easier to dominate, but the more powerful ones will be better allies and more capable of completing your goals.
F0azTq2.jpg
The Uruk Army

Meanwhile, while you are ordering your minions around and trying to advance your goals, the Warchiefs are doing the same. The game generates missions for the NPCs as well, where they can go on hunts, execute traitors, murder rivals, etc. Completing these missions makes them more powerful (same with your minions) and the more powerful an orc becomes, the more strengths it gains and the more weaknesses it loses, making the game more challenging the more time you take. The game has a day/night cycle, with different beasts present in each.

Lastly, the Death system. Remember how I mentioned that Grunts can become Captains by defeating an important adversary? That's where this comes in. When Talion falls in combat, he does not die permanently. He has been possessed by the Wraith of Celebrimbor, and like the Ring-Wraiths, he returns to life. However, it takes time to rejuvinate, and during this time, the orcs are completing missions and becoming more powerful. Meanwhile, the orc that delivered the final blow improves greatly in power, and if it was an unnamed Grunt, it advances to a Captain. Foes that have defeated Talion will remember him, which makes him their nemesis and gives special dialogue to them.

Change Someone Else's Title! -- the Rebirth

We haven't done this in a long time and despite what you may think, this needs to happen.

Summary:
  • You post and you post and you post. Whoever starts a new page wins that round and gets to change the title of one of the posters on the previous page. This continues until we get bored and stop posting.

How to Play:
  1. Post.
  2. Keep posting.

The Rules:
  • Winning
    • If you start a new page, you win.
    • Winning means you can change someone's title (see below).
    • Jailed people may not win. If a jailed person starts a new page, the first non-jailed person is the winner.
  • Losing
    • Losing sucks, get over it.
    • Losing means a winner decided to change your title.
    • Please be prompt in changing your title. Being slow ruins the fun of the game. You may change your title here.
    • Unless changed by someone else, please keep your title for 24 hours. Wear your badge of shame proudly.
    • If you have no intentions of changing your title should you lose, gtfo. People like you ruin the game.
  • Changing someone's title
    • Only certain people are eligible to have their title changed.
    • Jailed people cannot be losers (just as they cannot be winners). Please do not pick a jailed person as a loser.
    • You may not change your own title. You're already a loser, but don't pick yourself as a loser in this game.
    • Please choose one of the last 5 unique, non-jailed, non-you, posters from the previous page. This person will be the loser.
    • Edit your winning post (ie - first post on the page) with the person's name and their new title. Do not assign a title any place other than your winning post.
    • You have until the beginning of the next page to assign a title. Please be quick in assigning a title. Early stages of the game go quick and new pages start very often. We'll go by edit timestamps to see if you made it in time. If you do not assign a title in time, the loser does not have to change his or her title and we will all make fun of you for being slower than fuck.

Please check this post for rule updates/clarifications as there are always some people who are too dense to understand this simple game.

Have fun.

[Home Automation] How you can turn your house into a flowbee!

$

After buying my first home this year, I wanted to get deep into the rabbit hole of home automation. There are many different zigbees, z-waves, and gross old fashion wifi setups going around. I decided on the Smartthings ecosystem because it seemed pretty robust. Tested did a video on this and it tipped me over the edge to buy some of this stuff.
image

So I bought this kit.

SaDqXtbl.jpg
Initially I wanted some halfway security system that I could manage myself without the monthly fees.

So great! now I have a system I can monitor presence through our phones and monitor the doors while we are gone. Just in case someone breaks in we at least know about it and call the cops, but I wanted more automation and less just security detail.

So I bought these bulbs.

Now my front door lights turn on at dark and turn on when I get close to home at night. When I open the door in the morning and it is still dark out my porch lights turn on. I'm trying to work out a solution for indoor lighting but so far it's mostly ham fisted. I also bought a nest and its pretty but kinda sad it doesnt directly interface with the smartthings.

That's just my little fore into home automation. I'd like to get roomba for the hardwoods downstairs and things like an auto mower but I have heard very mixed things about them. SE++ how much money have you spent or want to spend making your home a huge gadget?

Pointless musings on Penny Arcade and comic strips in general

$

I was reading the Jim Henson biography. Near the beginning there's a section about the comic strip "Pogo", which ran for 27 years and had a huge impact on Jim Henson. He was a fan of the comic all his life, it seems.

I thought about the comic strips that have had that kind of impact on me, as-- like most folks-- I would read every comic strip I could find when I was a kid. Surprisingly, the first one that came to mind was Penny Arcade-- surprising in large part because I started reading it when I was 20, so I can't say I grew up with it, really. When I started reading Penny Arcade, its appeal was in its humor and its subject matter, but in the years since, I think I've continued reading it because it's honest. It's not about a cast of characters or a storyline or even a setting-- it's just a creative outlet for whatever's going on with these two guys, three times a week. The opinions that come through in each comic are usually there because that's just what they were thinking about at the time.

All of this is true of other comics I loved growing up, of course-- Calvin and Hobbes, Bloom County, even Peanuts-- but since Mike and Jerry are only a few years older than me, I found their comic more relatable. I don't know if anyone who's 20 right now would be likely to enjoy it. I wonder what comics are out there that would have the same power for that person. History has shown that there's always going to be something that will do it; the author, the artistic style, the voice, even the medium will change, but the power of comics hasn't really dissipated, has it?

Anyway. I don't know why I felt compelled to write all this, but thanks for reading it.

Sure, we have a beer thread. But there are so many other things with alcohol, and shouldn't they have a thread too? Bring us your whiskeys, scotches, bourbons and ryes. Bring us your gin, vodka, tequila, and sake. Bring us your bitters, your vermouth, your schnapps, and your flavored liquors.

Remember kids, candy is dandy but liquor is quicker.

I just got some of this and I am super psyched to drink it. Review, then drunk review, forthcoming.

The 2014 Census Results and 2015 Opinion Thread!

Never seen an opinion thread before? Well here's your crash course. Once a year we collect the names of people and put them in a thread. Then you figure out the people you want to give opinions for, and then you give them. Really, the whole thing is self explanatory. You don't really need a primer for this! Do it in order or cherry pick your favorites. Doing them all is a Herculean Endeavor that I do not recommend, though some people do this anyway with Smiley Face opinions in place of words. If that's your deal, then go for it! This is the 2014 census thread, 2015 opinion thread.

Neotoma Presents: The Last Gloss Standing

This is a thread where we play games by posting. It's a lot of RPG nonsense, run by a bunch of people with nothing better to do.
GlossLogo.png

We got all kinds of RPGs.

@Dux is running Ascend a theological horror cyberpunk adventure.

@Speed Racer is running Machinations a Metal Gear Homage Espionage (Espihomage) Pastiche.

@Bluedude152 is running Dust for the seventh time. It's about cowboys!

There's also Silver, which is sort of half-running, I guess, and could really use more players/activity.

Then, most importantly, there's A Van, a game about a van and the people inside it, which everyone should play.

Many games are recruiting, and most run on one of the following systems, with some tweaks here and there.

Systems:
[Tiny] [Block] [Balance]

You wake up, groggy. The radio is playing some awful slow jazz, heavy on the flute and soft on any sort of rhythm. Light shines through the towels-turned-curtains that cover the windows. You back hurts, on account of the cramped space, cold metal, and bits of junk strewn about the back.

You know the others around you. You were going somewhere to do something...

Damn That Music Sounds Classical

Do you like classical music? What even is classical music? Generally it is European music composed from the 11th century onward, with various periods known for a certain sound and style, Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic and to the present day! (thanks Wikipedia)

There is a lot classical music out there, some is very well known and you will have certainly have heard before such as The Blue Danube by Johann Strauss:
image

And some not so much such I Giorni by still alive Italian pianist Ludovico Einaudi, though if you live in the UK you will have possibly heard the BBC use this:
image

Some is very old like Greensleeves, possibly/possibly not written by Henry the Eighth (lets not go there), there are much older by far I’m sure, though this is the 1500s:
image

And some can have that modern feel of jazz that George Gershwin creates in the 1920s that proved very popular in movies:
image

It can be somber and sad such as Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber:
image

Or lively! Party on Jupiter.

I've been enjoying a lot of classical music lately, maybe we could share some? What do you enjoy most?

Maybe this thread will die after the first page, who knows!

Payday 2: Fuck the Police, IT'S SPRING BREAK!

I ain't afraid no more.

Payday 2 is, obviously, the sequel to Payday: The Heist, and both games come from Overkill Software.

The first game was a co-op shooter that put you in several heists with the goal being to score a bunch of money. Impeding you was The Man in the form of an angry tide of police enforcement, and players had to juggle their criminal tasks while keeping the fuzz at bay. The game had randomized elements to a degree in order to keep things from getting predictable, as well as multiple difficulties and a leveling system to give you a variety of items and weapons to use. I guess if you want to be mean, you could call it Left 4 Dead with zombies replaced with cops, but I feel that's being a bit unfair and the two games offer their own unique fun.

Payday 2 is available on the 360, PS3, and PC via Steam. It's around $29.99, and you can also get a four-pack on Steam for $89.99. Note: most people are playing on PC, as free updates come out more frequently. The game is coming to next-gen systems in the summer, and will include just about all the DLC and updates the PC version has enjoyed. Overkill claims that the XB1 and PS4 editions will be updated about as frequently as the PC, so if you prefer couch heists then look into it.

There's a ton of DLC available for the game, some paid and a lot is free. Furthermore, Overkill is pretty cool about DLC, and only one person needs to own DLC for a heist in order for the whole party to play it.

What's New in Payday 2?

Payday 2 has a significantly larger budget along with a new publisher: Starbreeze of Escape from Butcher Bay fame. The result is a much deeper experience with a lot of new features.
  • Uses Diesel Engine 2.0 for nicer graphic times.
  • Instead of the previous leveling system, you now have five classes with skill trees. This time around you cannot get everything, but roles are more clearly defined and skill choices matter more.
  • Purchase skills, weaponry, weapon mods, and masks with actual cash from your jobs. You can take bigger risks in a job by grabbing more loot or play it safe and bail early.
  • Customize masks with decals, textures, and colors.
  • Players can now stealth a job, which means completely completing a job without police being alarmed. Stealth is difficult and requires heavy coordination, but full stealth means you can get all the aforementioned optional cash in a level. Stealth is useful even if you eventually trip an alarm, as it delays police assaults.
  • Crime Net now generates missions at random. This means that you have less control over what you pick, but it also means you don't run the same mission over and over because your friends care more about grinding levels than fun having.
  • As a result of the above, special "Pro Jobs" can appear, which are one-shot missions that offer bonus rewards. Fail, and there will be no retry option until the next Pro Job pops up in Crime Net.
  • A heist can now take place over multiple days, resulting in a large Pay Day at the end. How you perform each day will change how the next day plays out. Fail to cook enough meth to pay off some local gang members for vital information, and you'll have to spend time fighting said gang to steal the info.
  • More random elements. Sometimes police will pump nerve gas into the bank. Sometimes you'll have to do a short, extra mission between days to escape police. It'll take a while for heists to get super stale.
  • Plenty of heists and, when taking days into consideration, equals to over 30 maps. Five Difficulty levels: Normal, Hard, Very Hard, Overkill, and Death Wish.

You can play with the skill calculator here, but the following is a brief rundown of the four classes.

U7tw6pg.png
Every good heist needs crowd control, and the Mastermind is the person you want for that job. Masterminds specialize in manipulating others, be it civilians or even their fellow criminals. A low-level player can offer med kits to heal wounded players or obtain more hostages with increase cable tie capacity, whereas a higher level players can get civilians to revive them, revive fellow crooks faster, or even convince law enforcement to turn traitor and work for you.

Masterminds tend to work with pistols and rifles.

If you want muscle, then hire a good Enforcer. Intelligent gunman covered in thick armor, Enforcers provide the necessary firepower for when things get hairy. Low-level Enforcers carry the group's spare ammunition and assist with heavy lifting, but a high level wears exclusive experimental armor, can use a saw to quickly bust through doors or barriers, and can take loads of punishment before going down.

Enforcers favor shotguns.

In today's world, many financial institution enjoy the protection offered by bleeding edge technology, and that's where the Technician comes in. Technicians handle the machinery needed to get to the loot. A lot level Technician will bring a few explosives, and a high level Technician can install deadly sentry guns, drill through the toughest safes and doors quickly, and even modify their tripwire mines to blow open particularly stubborn objectives.

Technicians favor rifles, particularly for sniping.

The best heist is one nobody knows about until you're back at the safe house counting your take. This is the Ghost's area of expertise, sneaking into areas unnoticed and quietly dealing with obstacles. Even if you're eventually caught, a Ghost can allow a crew to make serious headway on a heist before the alarms go off. Low level Ghosts can jam communication devices and dodge gunfire, whereas a high level Ghost will swiftly and silently pick a variety of locks, bag bodies for hiding, and modify their jammers to open electronic locks or incapacitate enemies.

Ghosts favor silenced weapons.

Fugitive
Adapted to life on the run, a fugitive specializes in keeping a low profile and being particularly slippery when things get hot. They can drop first aid kits that allow their fellow heisters to patch themselves up quickly, a handy tool when time is of the essence. They boast an uncanny ability to dodge incoming fire, and are good at keeping things clean and quiet when trying to go stealth.

Fugitives favor dual-wielding pistols, with a penchant for melee attacks.

Tips for New Players!
  • Visit the Safe House. You get a level and some cash. A lot of cash if you preordered. This means you can get your first skill and won't be as useless.
  • Buy new weapons ASAP. The starter weapons are awful peashooters. I recommend buying the Crosskill, a pistol that you might stick with for the rest of your criminal career. The AK is a wonderful rifle although you may find yourself running out of ammo.
  • Perk Decks replace tier bonuses from skills. It's highly recommended you stick with one deck at the start, because the decks offer XP and item drop bonuses as you build them. Once a deck is finished you can start building other decks.
  • Repeating the same heist incurs an XP penalty!
  • Starting at level 50, you unlock an alternate skill set in case you wish to have a stealth or loud build handy.
  • An enemy that goes down is not necessarily dead. The two exceptions to this is if the helmet or weapon flies off. An enemy that loses their helmet or weapon is dead.
  • Paygrade is general level-based difficulty (white dots) and then you have difficulty level (yellow dots). You will probably be perfectly capable of doing an Overkill (three yellow) Four Stores (one white) heist in your mid teens or even earlier. Go for harder stuff for more cash and XP!
  • Enemies drop ammo! Sometimes it's worth it to take a risk and briefly sprint for some some extra bullets.
  • You can only be downed but so many times before your next time being downed will instantly put you in custody (remove you from play). You'll notice your vision loses a bit of color when you're on your last legs.
  • Stay close and cover backs. Enemies spawn where there is no line of sight by players. Try to form a triangle that covers all exits while one player is a roamer that does objectives or relieves a player that needs ammo or a med kit.
  • Tie up hostages, as this will reduce assault timers, and hostages can also be exchanged for a player who has be put in custody.
  • You can move one hostage at a time by holding F near a tied up hostage and SLOWLY lead them somewhere. Try to keep hostages near your current objective, as cops can and will try to free them.
  • Try to use casing mode to scout around and take of as much as possible. Unlock doors, note safes and objectives, and so forth. Assaults get progressively worse, so delaying the first one as much as possible will increase your odds of success.
  • Keep multiple routes of escape open. Having four of your hold down one room seems smart until a shield or bulldozer(s) wreck your collective shit.
  • Try to stay on the offensive during an assault. Killing more enemies will make the assault end sooner; just be smart about it.
  • Head shots deal the most damage, and should be your goal. However, sometimes aiming for center mass on a crowd can be smarter, as it will suppress the enemy and a few of them will likely be temporarily knocked down by the hits.
  • There are different hit sounds for when a hit against you ate armor or ate health. Learn to distinguish the two.
  • Highlight special enemies by hitting F. This temporarily highlights the enemy and allows your crew to see said enemy through walls. This is particularly useful when dealing with shields and snipers.
  • Use iron sights. Love iron sights.
  • As you level, you should try to delineate tasks by skills. For example, the slow enforcer should be tossing bags while providing cover fire for a quicker Mastermind or Ghost. The Techie should be staying near the drill. This heavily varies by build (it's entirely possible for an Enforcer to forgo armor for speed), but you should sort this out before starting a heist.
  • Elements are highly randomized. Do not assume something will be the same unless you've run the heist enough to know most iterations of random elements.

My hero. Next?

Sign5_zpserlz0l9c.png

Of course you were. We all were, Will.

Sign4_zpsoyoea0wv.png

This is a solid sign, but I wonder how it will turn out. It's very colorful, though! What's the last one?
